First post and maybe an obvious answer but I thought I would ask before I purchased (not that it really makes any difference).
When you have a dual slot module (like the BA Essence) which module slot would be used to patch through with a patchbay.....the 1st channel slot or the 2nd channel slot (or maybe both/either)?
2nd question to Pan60. I know I saw it mentioned somewhere but I have searched GS for a couple days and have been unable to find it.
You have a compressor that you mentioned you used that was pretty heavy on the colorization and it was fairly inexpensive and by a company I had never heard of.
I believe the module was cream colored. I went to their website and planned to go back and look a bit closer but for the life of me I can't remember the name of the company or the module. Can you help?

Hi... Welcome!
Pan60 I am sure will chime in too!
Question 1.
Depends on the manufacturer and the construction of the card I would imagine, but I have never seen a unit that didn't use the first channel inputs/outputs. In other words if you use slots 5 and 6 the I/O would be on the jacks on channel 5.
Question 2:
Wild guess, but maybe you are thinking of the original Komit Compressor, which is now being manufactured by Radial Engineering (Did I get it Pan?? ). It is no longer cream colored, but green :-)

NO, not the Kommit. I am familiar with that one. :p
Thanks for the first part answer. That's kinda what I was thinking but thought I would verify.

now i think i have it backwards!   it may be the second slot! I will check tonight if Pan60 or someone else has not chimed in yet.
but it is not "both" or "either". My guess is it is whatever card the slot the module actually uses, the edge connector is tied to the inputs/outputs directly behind the PCB etc.
Some manufacturers have taken advantage of the I/O with other features.
my lunchbox or modules don't get moved much (patchbay) so I better actually look.
Hmm.. can't wait to hear the answer on that "creamy" compressor??

Standard Audio Level-Or perhaps? But that's not cream. I have two but don't think of them as compressors so much as distortion devices. ;)
As for the double-wides, they're all different. I know of some with i/o on both slots but they are stereo units.

THAT'S IT!
Level-Or
The picture I saw made it look kinda cream colored. Is it white?
yes, I knew it was kinda a specialty module but compressor was what kept coming to mind.
Since you have 2 of them, you must like them.
How do you typically use them?
Thanks!

They're brushed raw aluminum.
Bass & Drums are the obvious 1st choice to use them.

I have been toying with the idea of either the Level-Or (now that I know what it is again) or the VOG. Just looking for something a little off the beaten path....
Also, I went and found the BA Essence manual online and it appears that channel 1 would be the in/out and the 2nd channel would be used for potential side chaining.
I guess like you guys said, it will vary and be dependent on the actual module.

Thanks Denyle. Ok, since I am supposed to be moderately informed :D I realize I completely blew this one. Finishing my studio wiring has melted my brain (and it's not quite done! How will I ever finish without brain?). Sorry Stephent28!
I thought about the Level-Or for second and then thought "Nah, that's got an aluminum faceplate!". But it sure has color from what I have heard (which is just the circuit it was based on - the Level-Loc - not the Level-Or itself.) I think "color is an understatement. I agree with Denyle, it is almost more of an effect/distortion box. A studio I worked at had one and it pretty much lived on the mono room mic.
Back to the slots... A good example of a product using the second set of I/O is the Buzz Essence (http://www.buzzaudio.com/products/essence.htm). The Left (lower number) inputs carry the signal and the right (higher number slot) are used as side-chain send / return. I know of no product that lets you plug into either set of jacks, and of course, yes the stereo units use both sets.
Ok, back to looking for my brain.

Ok, I was typing this as you were typing the same thing! I am officially banning me from this thread for the rest of the evening!
