Folks, the boards are in for the XQP 545 Optical Disrupter, and the metal parts are about two weeks out.

This is an optical compressor that creates asymmetrical distortion as its primary product.

Pictured here is a four-ship formation.

congrats Dane! So this is more of an "effect" than a "compressor"? Can yougive some thought as to application? Soft Clipping? other?

Look forward to some sound clips.

James

It is definitely an effect. It's not intended as a compressor, but it does that along the way. It doesn't clip actually. It is an optical compressor type of design, but the LEDs in the VACTROLs are driven by an AC waveform rather than a rectified one. This produces an asymmetrical waveform in the audio path but no clipping. Nothing is overdriven.

I do have some clips on the website. I threw these up rather quickly one day, and I plan to do some better ones. But they'll give you an idea.

Less than 200 miles, I'd say. :D

I'm expecting metal parts within 2 weeks. I may go to Tulsa to pick them up. Why don't you come to Tulsa and I'll hand one off to you. That's about half way between us I think.

I didn't answer this question very well. I will quote a guy I once heard at a Japanese restaurant: "This is (ABC) sauce. Good on everything. This is (XYZ) sauce. Good on everything."

This thing actually responds to low frequencies. It will affect the whole spectrum, but the lows are what sort of make it happen. It is somewhat like overdriving a small speaker with too much bottom end. The low end kinda coughs, but the highs are rattled along the way. This is a very scientific explanation. Of course, using just a little doesn't produce quite the car-speaker-about-to-fall-out-of-the-door sound.

I guess the application is anything you think it sounds good on! If you listen to the samples on the website, you'll see (or hear) that it does an interesting thing to the guitar track, which is a tele and not exactly a bass kind of sound. It tends to do different things to different sounds.

I working on it as fast as I can. Fortunately, my metal guys in Tulsa, Ideal Specialty Company, are very busy now after a slow year last year. So we're happy to have to wait a few weeks. Shouldn't be much longer.

OK, the metal is finally in, and the 545 Disrupter is shipping. I'm sending four out in the morning.

I've included a very terrible photo. I didn't have time to shoot one that looked better. I'll try to do that tomorrow.

Cool!

Not very often I am impressed by a "new" product!
I am quite interested in this one though.

I love mangling audio! Muahahaha (sound of sparks and screams from the dungeon here)

I want to order one of these soon, and if it does stuff I like, I want a second unit.

Great out of the box thinking Dane!
