The BAE 312a is still my fav for bass, whether it's direct or the line out from my B-15. Miked B-15 usually goes through a EM Silver.

Anyone have any experience with the EM Red on bass? I heard it's low end on electric guitar and thought it would sound cool for bass.

Hi Kronos147,
I would say the EM-Red is cool for Guitars and racked Toms for drums.
The one that most people use for Bass is the EM-Silver and EM-Gold.
BUT I have Bass Players like CC Thomas who love the EM-Blue!! :)
So I guess it all depends on what you are looking for in your sound.
You're right down the street from me ..so why don't you just give me a ring and if you would like to try something just let me know.
The REDDI is the Kick Ass for bass period........(IMO)
You should hear some mics thru it as well......it just might double your dynamic mic collection ;)
Let me know okay?
Have fun,
Peter

I work with VSI Audio.
I'll give you guys a shout though when I clear out some time.
Thanks!

Yeah, it sounded pretty sweet at James Lugo's place on his electric. The bass response was so HUGE I thought it would sound awesome on bass.
Where is my green with envy emoticon?
He he.

I have a favorite pre for a DI sound. I know I can re-amp later, but I like to have the bass player hear the sound, it affects their playing, you know? If I use a 500 series pre and want to hear the amp, I end up multing on the patchbay and going to the pro tools input and another preamp at the same time. I use a preamp that has both +4 on XLR and -10 on 1/4" to convert the signal to unbalanced to send to the amp. Then I mic the amp.
I think that of the options out there it makes the REDDI one of the cooler options with the loop output to amp onboard.
At some point it would be cool to see a 500 format DI module, that had an in and an out on the front panel. It would be cool if the balanced line input was used for re-amping.
I have asked VSI, but that project is way down on the que, for whatever reason. [Begin Pipe Dream]If I had half a brain I would get another Eisen kit and make it myself![End Pipe Dream]

It's already in the database but it appears I need to fix the link to the site.

Yep, pretty much. It is only missing the re-amping capability. Interesting they went without a amp block.

You "could" re-amp with my DI (I do) but I believe other products on the market are better for that job for a couple of reasons.
Most 500 racks are installed in the control room. To re-amp and keep your unbalanced/high impedance instrument cable from picking up AM radio you would need to have the amp in the room with you, next to the 500 rack. (about 15' is about the limit for instrument cables) This setup would be less than optimal for combo amp's for obvious reasons.
If you have a portable lunchbox to move into the live room (what I do), you would still need to find a place to plug in the A/C power. I find this incredibly annoying when I need to get something done. Last thing I want to do when I'm in the middle of recording is to go find another power strip+extension chord because an empty receptacle is not available.
I built the passive DI's because I really like to use different pre's depending on the source signal. The result is an array of sounds not available with other pre/DI combos. You can mix and match, ya know?
A duel topology active DI is in the works. I hope to have something ready to show in the first quarter of 2009.
Kronos147, looks like I'm just over the hill from you as well. If you want a unit to demo, let me know.

That would be nice. It would be cool to get together with another manufacturer of 500 series stuff too. You get out to Burbank much?

Direct box right at the instrument amp. Summit TD-100. If there are instrument amps in the studio, then I always have an extra AC receptacle sitting there. There ain't no running around on that. It's there. Also Anthony Demaria Labs ADL-200 or ADL-300 for direct. All three of these boxes have instrument in and "direct thru" out to the amp. Jensen DB transformers in the ADL boxes. Variable impedance loading on the Summit. We also like the Great River MP500-NV for direct. DW.

Buzz Mia DI into the Avedis MA5 is a deadly combo. Gotta go re-spackle the walls now.
