512c's and MD-421's on toms is about the most 70's stock tom sound that can be had.
Through the console (or ITB) I add compression on the insert. Flavor de jour has been the BSS DPR-404.
I used to use tube pres (modded TL Audio PA-1's) and TLM-103's on each pair of toms. That gets pretty huge! But the API 512c and MD-421 on toms seems like the most versatile setup for the studio these days.
Unless you count Glyn/Andy Johns... but that would be another forum. ;)
